Libby’s Legacy: Compassionate Care in the Heart of Littleton

In the heart of Downtown Littleton, just steps from Main Street, you’ll find a community where every resident’s story is celebrated. Libby Bortz Assisted Living has long been a cornerstone of compassionate elder care, and during a recent conversation with Marketing Director Jan Stephans, we discovered why this nonprofit stands out—not just in Littleton, but across Colorado.

Libby’s Legacy

A longtime Littleton advocate for seniors, Libby Bortz was the champion behind the welcoming facility.

“Libby Bortz Assisted Living is a place where the mind and heart come together,” says Libby proudly about the location that bears her name.

One of Libby’s top priorities for the facility? Affordability.

“While the average cost of assisted living in Colorado exceeds $4,000 per month, we can offer quality care at significantly lower rates—around $2,830 per month—thanks to careful stewardship and our partnership with South Metro Housing Options,” says Jan. “Libby really was our visionary.”

Familiar Faces, Creative Spaces

One of Libby Bortz’s standout features is the longevity of its staff. Many employees have dedicated more than a decade to the community, with some celebrating nearly 30 years of service. As Jan notes, “This continuity ensures that residents experience consistent care and deep relationships with staff who know them inside and out.”

Every wing of the facility features unique décor to help residents navigate their surroundings, while sunlit living rooms, outdoor patios, and cozy nooks create a truly homelike environment. Impressive displays of residents’ artwork adorn the walls and include paintings and drawings of Littleton monuments like the historic grain mill a block away, wildflowers and animals.

Serving Those Who Served

With 12 veterans currently residing at the facility—the most Jan has seen in any community—Libby Bortz places special emphasis on support and camaraderie. Veterans gather monthly in their dedicated group to share stories, celebrate milestones, and include surviving spouses and family members.

In addition to creating space for veterans to connect, the staff ensures military families have access to resources like the Veterans Aid and Attendance benefit which provides financial aid to help offset the cost of long-term care.

A “Veterans Wall” also showcases an LCD screen with rotating images of the residents and their family members who served, as well as their offspring who now serve. The Libby Bortz community even chose to “adopt” an active-duty soldier abroad, sending handwritten cards of support and donating care packages in his name.

Cycling Without Age: Free Outdoor Trishaw Rides

Among the most beloved programs offered at Libby Bortz is Cycling Without Age Littleton, a partnership that brings volunteer pilots and specialized “trishaws” to the community each week. These three wheeled bikes have carriages in the front that can hold two passengers, providing free wind-in-the-hair experiences for those unable to do so themselves.

“They come every Thursday during nice weather, and they give our residents rides throughout Littleton and down the Platte River trail. It’s a wonderful program,” says Jan.

How the Community Can Connect

Libby Bortz welcomes local involvement. “We always welcome volunteers who want to read to residents, accompany them for walks, or participate in activities,” says Jan. “They help bring energy and connection to our community.” Intergenerational programs are also expanding, with local schools and clubs encouraged to engage with residents in meaningful ways.

“My family was in the military, and I grew up in Germany,” notes Jan. “When I lived in Germany, I saw how much respect and honor were given to older generations. That perspective has guided my work ever since. There is so much we can learn from our senior citizens. They still have so much to give.”
